Why SMU lost to TCU 21-7
Because TCU scored more points.
Obviously.
How were those points scored?
Through the concerted efforts of the SMU coaching staff.
It must be a concerted effort because there’s no way THAT many people could be THAT bad at their jobs at the SAME time without a planned effort.
Offense 7-7
SMU’s strong suit is their offense. Freshman All-American Justin Willis leads an attack that can’t convert short-distance-downs because the coaches don’t understand that a QB could actually line up under center (instead of in the shotgun).
TCU’s offense is terrible. Anyone who tried to say they were going to bust up the BCS just needed to look at their offense. SMU’s pass-defense was ranked 119th (out of 119) while allowing 446.7 yds/game. TCU managed to rush for more yds (142) than they passed for (a whopping 108 yds).
Defense TCU 7-0
TCU’s defense IS the reason people expect this team to do something. They played good enough. The interception returned for a TD is what sealed the game. The fact that Willis doesn’t know how to read a linebacker in coverage (he threw a nearly identical pick in the last game) has something to do with poor coaching combined with a poor decision on his part.
SMU’s defense actually stopped somebody. After you watch Tx Tech, UNT, and Ark St put up 49, 45, & 45 points, respectively, you’re shocked when the other offense scores only 7 points on 250 yds. Good effort from a mediocre unit.
Sp Tms TCU 7-0
Admittedly, I don’t know much about TCU’s special teams. They made the biggest play of the game, and their punter managed to out-kick one of the best in the country.
Thomas Morstead is one of the most important players for SMU. He’s 4-4 on FGs while averaging 45.4 yds/punt. Then he gets blocked. Not because he held the ball. Not because of a bad snap. But because one of the lineman decided he didn’t need to block anyone. Literally. “Coach, what was I s’posed to do when all three a’ them lined up way outside like that?” Well, maybe you should have known your blocking assignment BEFORE THE PLAY STARTED!!
I’m not one to blame everything on coaches, but I know football. Are the players making the bad plays? A lot of times, yes. The question is, have they been give the knowledge and opportunity to succeed? No.
Fire Bennett now. That way every coach out there knows that there is a young program with some talent that is in the market.
I’ve been a loyal SMU fan for 10 years and will continue to be one for the rest of my life.
